Supportive Periodontal Therapy (Routine Maintenance)

Dental health

Successful control of bacterial plaque is directly related to a patient’s control of the multiple side effects of bacteria that live in the oral cavity and in regions of the mouth that are difficult to maintain. Access for disorganization of plaque with dental floss and tooth brushing is very important in this process. The buildup of hard, rough, calculus or tartar can make hygiene difficult and these deposits create ideal spots for bacterial colonies to hide – a perfect incubator site! Daily brushing and flossing will keep the formation of dental calculus to a minimum, but it won’t completely prevent it. A professional cleaning by a dental hygienist on a four month basis allows access for this critical control because the hygienist can remove hardened calculus and sticky plaque in places that your toothbrush and floss have missed. A periodontal maintenance visit is usually more detailed than a routine dental cleaning and Drs. Caldwell and Dimmitt will usually recommend that surgery be followed by a series of “Supportive Periodontal Therapy” visits that will eventually be alternated with cleanings in your general dentist’s office. Regular periodontal maintenance visits are an important part of your oral hygiene program to prevent gum disease and keep your teeth for a lifetime.
